This is not much of a question as it is a report on an error that I’m getting in this particular model.
First, I should clarify that I’m using Cylces and Blender version 2.79b.
It seems that you guys are using microdisplacement for the towels. As for version 2.79b, Blender doesn’t support the use of normal maps in Tangent Space mode at the same time as microdisplacement.
It can’t handle the calculations and ends up rendering the object black.
If you want to use normals and microdisplacement at the same time, you should set the mode to World Space or Object Space (it looks weird sometimes, but at least it’s better than pure blackness, haha).
I don’t know if using another render engine this issue is solved, but I believe most people who use Blender either use Cycles or the newer EEVEE (I don’t know if the issue continues in EEVEE) and you might want to address it and have it in mind for future models.
EDIT: If this is uploaded in the wrong section, please, feel free to move it! I’m not sure if this is the correct one.November 29, 2018 at 6:21 am #13307
Thank you for coming to us with this issue!
I have been considering this issue for a little time myself, and have decided to keep this node set up.
The reason is, that in all of the newer Blender builds the dedicated Displacement node addresses the issue you mention above with the incorrect normal maps turning the item black.
I understand that a lot of people are using 2.79b, but at the same time I know there are many many people branching out to the newer versions like 2.79.3 and 2.8 even.
I’m sort of stuck between either making it work with the blender build people may most likely be using now, or make the item usable for all blender builds being made now. Blender is sort of in a limbo with several versions coming out (more notably 2.8).
I have checked and in 2.8 my node set up works too, but displacement is not a feature of Eevee just yet, but I imagine it will use my node set up.
Hmm… I really understand your point though. Maybe I make 2 node set ups and put a frame around them to say “use this one for 2.79b and this one for later versions”. Displacement is such a pain right now haha.
I’ll look into it and see what most people are using and try to work out what best to do 😛
